How to test intake manifold runner control

Feb 21, 2011 · Hello all, I'm new to forum and have a question. I have a 2008 dodge avenger 2.4L and am getting the code p2004. It seems that this means the IMRC is stuck open. Does that mean I have to replace the IMRC or is this something I can just regrease; or, could this be a wiring problem and if so...

Jan 17, 2017 · Many modern vehicles use an intake manifold runner control (IMRC) system to improve engine performance and fuel economy. This design uses a solenoid controlled actuator (or module) to open and close the intake manifold butterfly valves.
P2004 – Intake Manifold Runner Control Stuck Open Bank 1; P2005 – Intake Manifold Runner Control Stuck Open Bank 2; P2006 – Intake Manifold Runner Control Stuck Closed; To fix this problem you will need to replace the intake manifold air flap lever using Repair Kit 2721402401. This part is located by the intake manifold. After momentarily turning off the ignition, just long enough for the engine to start winding down, the check engine light came on and the engine started running roughly at idle and over 2K rpm. It will not run well at all over 50 mph. The code set is 2004. After looking on line for the Intake Manifold Runner Control, and watching a youtube video on fixing it, I checked the hoses for cracks and ...

How to test intake manifold runner control

Code P2004 stands for Intake Manifold Runner Control Stuck Open Bank 1. The intake manifold directs air into the engine via a series of runners. To improve engine performance, many late-model vehicles use what’s referred to as an intake manifold runner control (IMRC) system.

The length of the runner determines how long the harmonic takes to get back to the intake valve. For this reason, long runners will "supercharge" the engine at low rpm, and very short runners will do it at high rpm. The height, width and volume of the runner determine how much air can go through, which dictates top-end horsepower. A stored code P2004 in your OBD II equipped vehicle means that the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected that the intake manifold runner control (IMRC) actuator for engine bank one is stuck in the open position. Bank 1 denotes that the problem has occurred in the bank of the engine that contains the number one cylinder.
P1518 - Intake Manifold Runner Control Malfunction (Stuck Open) The IMRC system is monitored for failure during continuous, key ON engine OFF or key ON engine running self-test. The test fails when the signal on the monitor pin is less than an expected calibrated range at closed throttle.

Right now I'm working on fixing my Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) on my 98 3.8L Windstar. There are two of these things bolted on the engine near the top, behind the alternator and belt. These things seem to cause trouble very frequently, so I'd like to share the information I gathered about this.
